Here are some of the big changes awaiting you as Google readies Android 12, based on the original beta of Android 12 and Google's own launch of software updates.

Android 12: Release date with betas

Google has been touting the release of a new version of Android with the launch of the latest Nexus or Pixel phone, even though the company has moved away from that pattern in recent years.

The last two versions of Android came out in early September - Android 10 on September 3, 2019 and Android 11 on September 8, 2020. (Recent Pixels did not arrive until a month later in both cases.) Although the epidemic disrupts -Android 11, Google still hits that September.

New UI: The biggest change in Android in several years comes with Android 12. We get a completely new and exciting Material You UI. The system now draws highlight colors from your background image to get a brighter theme and a more compact look. You can now customize the options for engaging yourself. There are changes to notification shade and Quick Settings, too.

Specifically, you’ll find large, rotating blisters in the shadow of the notification. Google calls this look "complicated and playful," but the real result is that it's easy to see things at a glance. And quick action is probably why you called the notification shade in the first place.

Widgets, too, are getting better performance on Android 12. It will be up to app developers to accept them as their software, just as iOS engineers have made widgets for the iPhone, but the ones created by Google look bigger, rounder and informative.

Fast settings development: Speaking of Instant Settings, Android 12 lets you do a lot more from that menu, including access to Google Pay and Home Controls for connected devices. In fact, Google says you can control "almost every app by swiping and taping."

New way to launch Google Assistant: In the build up to the release of Android 12, we've heard that Google plans to include more ways to make its own digital assistant without just saying, "Hello, Google." Google has confirmed that the long-pressing of the home button is now launching Google Assistant. And it looks like Google has removed the old swipe from the action to remove the Assistant in Beta 3.

Better performance and energy efficiency: Due to under-hood improvements, Google says things should be more fluid in Android 12. Specifically, Google claims to reduce the required CPU time for basic system services by up to 22% with the use of capital letters with a system server up to 15%. This should lead to more responsiveness to daily use and longer battery life.

Scrolling Screenshots: Here we are, finally! Android 12 supports screenshot scrolling, allowing you to take multiple shots at once instead of using multiple images. It's available in third-party Android 12 beta and while it's really fun, even though it still needs some work.

Privacy: Google is taking a hard and fast privacy path with Android 12. While we haven't seen anything in the App Tracking level brought to the latest iOS 14.5 update from Apple, we see Google taking things seriously.

There is a new privacy dashboard where you can see which apps have accessed what permissions. Appearance draws in the minimal build from Google Fit for all things, and from what we've seen so far, it's an exciting feature if you're worried about the performance of your apps.

In addition to noticing what apps are doing from the privacy dashboard, you can revoke permissions from there.
